DRILLING DETERGENT

Drilling Detergent is an aqueous blend of surface-active agents. It is designed to reduce the surface tension of all water-base mud systems and reduce the sticking tendency of water-sensitive shale cuttings.

(1). Physical State: The material shall be a soapy homogenous liquid at 24 ± 2°C, free from visible impurities and shall be miscible     with water.
(2). Density at 24 ± 2 °Cg/ml :   .........1.0 - 1.10.
(3). Surface Tension of 0.25%(v/v) Solution of the Sample in Distilled Water at 25 ± 10 C, dynes / cm: 35.0 (Maximum).
(4). pH of 1%(v/v) Solution of the Sample in Distilled Water:    ........7.5-10.5.

(5). Emulsion Stability Test:

To 485 ml of Distilled Water, add 15 ml of HSD oil slowly, whie stirring, in Hamilton Beach Mixer at medium speed. Then add 1ml of the Sample while stirring and continue stirring for 5 minutes. After the addition is complete, transfer the contents to 500m/ measuring cylinder and observe phase separations, as under:
(i) Immediate Separation of HSD oil:   .........There should be no immediate separation of HSD oil.
(ii) Separation of HSD Oil after 24-hours at room temperature:   .........Separation of HSD oil should not be more than 2ml.
(6). Mud Lubricity Test:

(i) Prepare 1.0 cP Bentonite Suspension in Distilled Water (obtained by dilution of pre-hydrated gel prepared from VISION approved Bentonite) and treat it with 0.5% (v/v) of the Sample and stir it for 5 minutes in Hamilton Beach Mixer, at medium speed. Defoam it (if necessary) by addition of 4 - 5 drops of Iso-octyl alcohol.

(ii) Determine Lubricity Coefficient of treated and defoamed Mud with Lubricity Tester.
  Lubricity Coefficient of the treated and defoamed mud should not be more than 0.20.

(7). Foaming Tendency Test:
Prepare 0.1%(v/v) Solution of the Sample in Distilled water Stir this solutoin for 10-Minutes in Hamilton Beach Mixer at high sped. Immediately transfer the content (along with foam) to a measuring cylinder. Allow to stand for 15-minutes and then measure the total volume of contents (along with foam). Calculate percent increase in volume due to foaming.
Increase in volume shall not be more than 5%.

LIMITATIONS


The freezing point of DRILLING DETERGENT is 32°F(0°C). DRILLING DETERGENT CWT, a special cold weather formulation with a freezing point of -29°F(-20°C), is available.

APPLICATIONS



DRILLING DETERGENT has application in all drilling areas and can be used in virtually any water-base drilling fluid. It is used primarily in upper-hole drilling to minimize bit and Bottom-Hole Assembly (BHA) balling, reduce surface tension, and aid in dropping sand and the removal of drill solids. It may be used as an emulsifier at any point in the drilling operation to improve emulsification of oil and reduce the viscosity of oil contaminated fluids.

DRILLING DETERGENT frequently reduces torque and drag, even when no oil is present in the system. Normal treatments range from 0.1 to 0.2 lb/bbl (0.29 to 0.57 kg/m3) and provide satisfactory performance under most conditions. In severe gumbo shale areas, 4 to 6lb/bbl (11.4 to 17.1 kg/m3) concentrations of DRILLING DETERGENT are recommended to minimize bit and BHA balling; higher concentrations may cause foaming and require a defoamer. DRILLING DETERGENT is effective in all water-base systems including freshwater, brackish water, sea water and saturated salt water fluids.
TOXICITY AND HANDLING


Bioassay information is available upon request. Handle as an industrial chemical, wearing protective equipment and observing the precautions as described in the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
PACKAGING AND STORAGE

Drilling Detergent is packaged in 55-gal (208‐L) drums. Store in a location away from sources of heat or ignition. Keep container closed. Keep away from heat, sparks and flames. Store away from incompatibles. Follow safe warehousing practices regarding palletizing, banding, shrink‐wrapping and/or stacking.
